About Me

I bring both an artist's eye and a researcher's background to my art appraisals and take great pleasure in exploring and researching various genres and styles of art. I've been actively involved in the visual arts community for over twenty years including gallery management, estate planning, custom picture framing and art conservation. I travel frequently throught out New England and am a member of arts associations in Vermont, Maine and Massachusetts. As an alumnus of the Maine College of Art I have a special connection to the arts community in Portland. I currently maintain an office and studio space in Burlington, Vermont's arts and business corridor. I am particularly knowledgeable in 19th & 20th century painting as well as New England regional painting.Credentials and EthicsIt is important to have a clear understanding of the art market and how it pertains to the valuation of art for insurance, estate planning and tax purposes. Having a vast knowledge of art history, art conservation methods and modern research technology are essential when preparing a qualified art appraisal that meets industry standards. I am dedicated to providing fair, accurate and objective information. To avoid any conflict of interest that may influence an appraisal, I am not an art dealer or auctioneer and unless otherwise noted will have no financial interests in the items appraised. Appraisal fees are based on time and have no correlation to the valuation. My appraisals are conducted through personal examination, either by my travel to a site or through the professional handling of items shipped to me. I do not offer on-line appraisals or auction/resale estimates.

Types of appraisals

There are various value definitions for appraisals. Here are two of the most common value definitions associated with art appraisals.Retail/Insurance or Replacement Value (RV) is the amount of money it would cost to replace an item with a like item of similar quality from a retail venue, in a relatively short period of time. This is generally the highest valuation figure for personal property and is the equivalent of buying from a high-end art dealer. RV is used primarily for insurance purposes. This valuation applies to a work of art that may need a specific valuation and rider in the client’s homeowner’s insurance policy. Most states do not require a license, certification or accreditation in the appraisal of art. As long as the appraiser is experienced, knowledgeable and ethical, an art appraisal done for the purposes of insurance would be viewed as a qualified appraisal by insurance companies in these states. Fair Market Value (FMV) is the amount a willing buyer would pay a willing seller in an open market, usually at auction, with both parties having full knowledge of relevant facts. FMV is generally less than RV and reflects how much it would cost to purchase an item at auction. FMV is used for estate and income tax appraisals and is defined in several IRS rules and regulations. The Internal Revenue Service requires an appraiser to have met certain minimum educational and experience requirements. The appraiser must have successfully completed college or professional-level coursework relevant to the property being valued, must have at least two years experience in the business of buying, selling or valuing the type of property being valued and must fully describe his qualifying education, professional associations, memberships and experience. An art appraiser does not necessarily have to be certified or licensed. More information can be found at www.irs.gov, specifically publication 561 and within form 8283.

Art Appraisals

John K. Alexander offers art appraisals for both Replacement Value (RV) and Fair Market Value (FMV). Replacement Value is applied primarily to those items that require insurance coverage. Fair Market Value is usually applied to charitable donations and estate values. Please view the Solutions section for the full definitions of RV and FMV types of appaisals and their respective qualifications and standards. Appraisal fees are based on time and have no correlation with the valuation. The current fee is $125 per hour. Appraisals are conducted through personal examination, either by travel to a site or through the professional handling of items shipped to me. An appraisal that may require travel is not necessarily a problem and is negotiable dependent upon distance and scheduling. Please note that travel time, mileage and travel expenses are usually seperately charged from the normal appraisal fee. In some circumstances an appraised item may require extra ordinary preparation and research expenses. In these cases an estimate and explanation of the extra fees will be discussed. The hourly fee can be negotiated if multiple items or an estate collection is being appraised. Most appraisals require a deposite of half the estimated fee amount.
